| Yueli
Yang, age 62, is a retired Senior Engineer in China’s
Aerospace industry.
As a young scientist, she participated in the research
and development of China’s first satellite launch,
a satellite called Dong Fang Hong. Yueli was hand selected
by Qian Xue Sen, the Director of China’s National
Science Committee, as one of four scientists to work
in the research and development of satellites and rockets.
She played a significant role in the launch of Long
March 3, which was considered a very advanced rocket
at that time.
With the heavy demands of her career, Yueli had developed
serious health problems over time. However, her ailments
were cured through practicing Falun Gong. When the Chinese
government began to persecute Falun Gong, Yueli persisted
in her practice. Refusing to renounce her belief in
Falun Gong, she was arrested on December 7, 2001 when
applying for the passport to come to Canada to join
her son, Zhendong Yang of Toronto.
On January 17, 2002, she was sent to labour camp without
trial and no further information has been made available.
Later, friends informed her family that she had gone
through an 8-day hunger strike during detention to protest
the persecution. She had been detained in the 2nd division
